Why are Pronouns Important?

Pronouns are primarily linguistic tools but in the current realm of language, they can be more than just linguistic tools. Pronouns are wwwww very personal and also play a key rolew in determining the respect given to the individual’s identity. Pronouns foster a sense of affirmation and also inclusivity among the people. With the huge increase of the LGBTQ advocacy, the need for using appropriate pronouns goes without saying and this is mainly essential for creating environments which embrace diversity and uphold the dignity of the community.
The common pronouns that we use daily are predominantly binary in nature. These include she/her/hers and he/him/his. But there exist non binary pronouns too which are necessary to be made aware of to reduce stress and anxiety of the queer community. Pronouns like they/them, even if it sounds plural, can be used to refer to a single individual from the community, and ze(also spelled as xe)/hir, sounds as zee and here, are a few examples that can be used to refer to someone belonging to the queer community in place of their name.
While it is often inevitable to misuse or misunderstand the usage of pronouns without proper knowledge of perceiving gender identities, this can be avoided with proper communication with the individual and yes, it is always advised to directly ask the person about their preferred pronouns and then proceed. Since using appropriate pronouns is one of the basic ways to show respect for their gender identity, the responsibility to be aware of such terms and adequately use them completely lies on us. According to a study in America, inculcating inclusive language usage for LGBTQIA+ youth and adults aids in drastically reducing experiences of depression, social anxiety, suicidal ideation and other mental health issues.
Some people use multiple pronoun sets like she/they which indicates that they are fine with either one being used or that they accept both. Purposeful misgendering is disrespectful and offensive to anyone irrespective of the gender they identify as. Pronouns are not solely limited to a particular section or community of people, it is essential to understand that being referred to by appropriate pronouns is everyone’s basic right. This also signifies the role of pronouns in achieving gender equality in contemporary society.
